CAS 101: An overview of the Contractor Assurance System (CAS)
(For Berkeley Lab employees only)
This overview of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Contractor Assurance System (CAS) provides a clear understanding of what CAS is, why it matters, and how it supports the Lab’s mission.
CAS is designed to promote accountability, strong performance, and continuous improvement across all areas of work. CAS functions as a systematic approach to planning, executing, assessing, and improving operations, research and support activities.
Within a research environment characterized by complex experiments, advanced instrumentation, and multidisciplinary collaboration, CAS provides the operational controls necessary to manage risk, maintain regulatory compliance, and safeguard scientific integrity.
Each individual contributes to the reliability, transparency, and continuous optimization of laboratory operations. Regardless of role, CAS 101 emphasizes that effective stewardship of facilities, funding, data, and safety systems is fundamental to sustaining high-impact scientific discovery.
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
- Describe the Government-Owned, Contractor-Operated (GOCO) model and the Tri-Party relationship
- Understand the purpose of CAS and its connection to the Prime Contract (C31)
- Identify key CAS principles and objectives
